Mayes lane

For several years Essex County Council insisted on applying surface dressing to Mayes Lane in Little Oakley. This was causing numerous problems as flying chippings were covering pavements, hitting cars, hitting pedestrians and in one case at least, even hitting a house window. The problem seemed worse in Mayes Lane than on other roads as the problem continued even after the initial bedding in of the surface, and it got worse again each winter.

When Essex County Council were planning to surface dress this road for a third time, I wrote to the portfolio holder for Highways at Essex County Council highways explaining the problems and demanding that they did not apply further surface dressing. Additionally, I requested that they completely resurface Mayes Lane. Following some further communication and a re-evaluation of their plans, Essex County Council agreed to my request and resurfaced Mayes Lane instead of applying the surface dressing as originally planned.
